چکیده

Frequency dependent selection and demographic fluctuations play important roles in evolutionary and ecological processes. Under frequency dependent selection, the average fitness of the population may increase or decrease based on interactions between individuals within the population. This should be reflected in fluctuations of the population size even in constant environments. Here, we propose a stochastic model, which naturally combines these two evolutionary ingredients by assuming frequency dependent competition between different types in an individual-based model. In contrast to previous game theoretic models, the carrying capacity of the population and thus the population size is determined by pairwise competition of individuals mediated by evolutionary games and demographic stochasticity. In the limit of infinite population size, the averaged stochastic dynamics is captured by the deterministic competitive LotkaVolterra equations. In small populations, demographic stochasticity may instead lead to the extinction of the entire population. As the population size is driven by the fitness in evolutionary games, a population of cooperators is less prone to go extinct than a population of defectors, whereas in the usual systems of fixed size, the population would thrive regardless of its average payoff.

Stochastic Evolutionary Game Dynamics: Foundations, Deterministic Approximation, and Equilibrium Selection

We present a general model of stochastic evolution in games played by large populations of anonymous agents. Agents receive opportunities to revise their strategies by way of independent Poisson processes. A revision protocol describes how the probabilities with which an agent chooses each of his strategies depend on his current payoff opportunities and the current behavior of the population. O...

Evolutionary Games

Since the workshop held at BIRS in 2006 on the same topic, evolutionary game theory has continued to expand in the directions identified there as well as in several new directions. There seems to be a tendency to reach out from the founding concept of an evolutionarily stable strategy, towards related concepts such as continuously stable strategies and stochastically stable strategies, towards ...

Multigame effect in finite populations induces strategy linkage between two games.

Evolutionary game dynamics with two 2-strategy games in a finite population has been investigated in this study. Traditionally, frequency-dependent evolutionary dynamics are modeled by deterministic replicator dynamics under the assumption that the population size is infinite. However, in reality, population sizes are finite. Recently, stochastic processes in finite populations have been introd...

Solving a Two-Period Cooperative Advertising Problem Using Dynamic Programming

Cooperative advertising is a cost-sharing mechanism in which a part of retailers' advertising investments are financed by the manufacturers. In recent years, investment among advertising options has become a difficult marketing issue. In this paper, the cooperative advertising problem with advertising options is investigated in a two-period horizon in which the market share in the second period...

Mean-Potential Law in Evolutionary Games.

The Letter presents a novel way to connect random walks, stochastic differential equations, and evolutionary game theory. We introduce a new concept of a potential function for discrete-space stochastic systems. It is based on a correspondence between one-dimensional stochastic differential equations and random walks, which may be exact not only in the continuous limit but also in finite-state ...
